Surrounded by crystal-clear waters, the Great Exuma's gently sloping beaches are floored in soft, white sand that simply invites sunning, snorkeling or wading. Sunlight refracts through the shallow water, creating a kaleidoscope of vivid aquamarine. Yet, this island paradise remains largely undiscovered, and home to only 3,400 residents.
Great Exuma and Little Exuma lie about 130 miles south of Nassau. The two islands total about 80 sq. miles and are paradise. The Exuma islands, which include Stocking Island and Elizabeth Island, create a safe and peaceful area and provide miles of beautiful harbor. Sheltered coves provide perfect water-skiing conditions while plentiful reefs offer snorkeling and scuba diving to be enjoyed by everyone. The Exuma islands offer world-class bonefishing along miles of beautiful flats.
Seascape's Beach
Of all the beautiful beaches on Great Exuma, crescent-shaped Tar Bay is particularly scenic. And, just outside the bay, a rainbow of brightly colored tropical fish, delicate coral and graceful manta rays abound in the pristine waters. Further away is Exuma Cays National Land and Sea Park, a 453-square-kilometre (175-square-mile) preserve founded in 1958, the first of its kind in the world. Home to several rare and exotic species of birds, reptiles, fish and flora, the park welcomes visitors, above the water or below, to an inspiring sanctuary, unspoiled by fishing or hunting. Divers can explore the magnificent coral reefs of Exuma Sound, filled with caves, drop-offs and blue holes.
Great Exuma is a relaxed easy living atmosphere not filled with the nightlife and hustle and bustle of commercialized areas, a perfect place to just relax. George Town has several native restaurants, small hotels, straw markets and boutiques. Also located in George Town are grocery stores, liquor stores, a medical clinic and three churches.
